Donnie Steele

Donnie Steele (born October 6)〔http://s8.postimg.org/7ixn6zb39/donniesteele.png/〕 is an American musician and founding member of heavy metal band Slipknot having been part of the original line-up from their inception in September 1995 until February 1996 during the mixing stages of the band's first release Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat which Steele performed all guitar tracks for. In 2011, Steele returned to Slipknot as a touring bass player to replace Paul Gray who had died in 2010.〔http://www.mtv.com/news/1659788/slipknot-reveal-donnie-steele-to-replace-deceased-bassist-paul-gray/〕 On September 12, 2014, after the release of The Devil in I music video, the new bassist and drummer appeared in the music video masked but the identity of the bassist was revealed by accident to be Alessandro Venturella due to his signature hand tattoos being uncovered.〔http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/general_music_news/meet_the_new_slipknot_bassist.html〕 This confirmed that Steele's second stint with Slipknot had ended. However it is still possible that Steele may have been involved in some or all of the studio sessions for ''.5: The Gray Chapter''.
==Career==
Steele grew up in the East Side of Des Moines and first found an interest in guitar at age 13. He played in a death metal band called "Body Pit".
Steele was part of the original line-up of Slipknot from their inception in September 1995.〔 When questioned in 1999 about Steele's departure Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison explained: "we were prepared to keep him on, but he didn't want to stay."〔 Steele left during the mixing stages of the band's first release ''Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat'' but had recorded all of his guitar parts prior to this.
He was replaced by Craig Jones shortly after his departure, Jones later switched to keyboards and sampling with Mick Thomson becoming the new and current lead guitarist. Steele had remained in touch with his former band mates and had become friends with Corey Taylor as well.
Steele played in a progressive metal fusion instrumental project with a friend called Nick Medina on drums who released a five-song EP recorded in his own home studio. Steele also continued to shape the local music with Killpact featuring local musicians Ernie McGinn, Rick Funderburk, Steve Pundzak, and a few other locals.
In 2011, Steele returned to Slipknot to replace recently deceased member Paul Gray on bass though originally a guitarist for the band.〔 A statement from the band's official website read: "Donnie was in the band at the very beginning, and rather than get an outsider, we thought it would be a fitting tribute to Paul to play with someone from within the family, Donnie was great friends with Paul and we can’t think of a better way to celebrate his memory than with someone who was there with us at the very beginning. The eight of us are looking forward to being onstage again and honoring Paul’s legacy with our families in Europe and Brazil this summer."
However, during the tours Steele would play backstage out of sight from the audience. This had divided many fans' opinions. Shawn "Clown" Crahan explained this move in an interview, he stated: "What gives him the right to be onstage with us right now?" and "When we're going through an experience like this with our fans, they need to concentrate on the eight members that are grieving, not on someone new. This isn't a diss on Donnie. I love Donnie, but we chose to tour for just one reason — to share the tragedy, pain and grief of what happened to Paul with our fans instead of going through it alone."〔http://www.spin.com/articles/slipknot-antennas-hell-and-why-their-bassist-stays-backstage/〕
In 2014 after three years back in the band, they announced the release of their fifth studio album ''.5: The Gray Chapter'' set for release in October 2014. A statement from Crahan in an interview stated: "No. 1, Donnie coming back felt completely comfortable for us. It wasn’t even a thought. It just fell into place. We’re not gonna have some jackass from another band come into our world. That’s just bullshit. I won’t allow it. Donnie’s family. Donnie’s from the stone of the ’Knot. He’s knitted right in."〔http://www.revolvermag.com/news/interview-outtake-slipknot-percussionist-clown-on-playing-with-original-guitarist-donnie-steele-again.html〕
On September 12, 2014 after the release of The Devil in I music video, the new bassist and drummer appeared in the music video masked but the identity of the bassist was revealed by accident to be Alessandro Venturella due to his signature hand tattoos being uncovered.〔 This confirmed that Steele's second stint with Slipknot had ended. Jim Root revealed in an interview that Steele was involved in some of the studio sessions for ''.5: The Gray Chapter'', but had ultimately declined to rejoin the band full-time in favor of starting a family with his wife.〔http://musicfeeds.com.au/features/slipknot-this-band-is-an-anomaly/2/〕
